Japanese sounds fascinating.
Understanding it is the real challenge.

You memorized hiragana, drilled kanji, and passed grammar quizzes. Then a native speaker talks at normal speed and you catch maybe one word in ten. The problem is not your knowledge - it is how your brain processes spoken Japanese.

a
Words blur together at native speed. Japanese speakers drop syllables, compress particles, and chain phrases seamlessly. Your textbook never prepared you for how "watashi wa" becomes "atashi wa" or disappears entirely.
b
Pitch accent changes meaning entirely. Unlike English stress, Japanese pitch accent is subtle and critical. "Hashi" can mean bridge, chopsticks, or edge - and only your trained ear can tell the difference.
c
Keigo (formal speech) sounds like a different language. Casual speech, polite speech, and honorific speech follow different patterns. Real-world Japanese demands you understand all three registers fluently.
d
You need a habit - not another app. Something simple enough to do daily, but deep enough to actually rewire how your brain decodes Japanese sounds and sentence structure.
“

I studied Japanese for four years in college but could never follow a real conversation. After two months of daily dictation on WELE, I watched an NHK documentary without subtitles and understood most of it. That was a breakthrough moment.

One simple method, backed by
100 years of research.(it works!)

Dictation has been a proven language teaching method for over a century. It works because it forces your brain to process every mora and particle - bridging the gap between reading Japanese and hearing Japanese.

01

Listen - the full clip

Pick a Japanese podcast at your level: NHK World Easy Japanese, JapanesePod101, or Nihongo con Teppei. Listen to the full 3-6 minute segment to grasp the overall meaning.

-> 3-6 min · natural speed
02

Transcribe sentence by sentence

Replay short segments. Type exactly what you hear in romaji or kana. No blanks to fill - you write every word. WELE compares your transcription to the original in real time.

-> 0.5x-1.25x · no skipping
03

Review - and understand

See which words you missed and why. WELE analyzes your errors, saves new vocabulary, and schedules spaced-repetition reviews using the FSRS algorithm.

-> your ear "learns" the correct sounds
Cambridge University study (2018)

Learners using dictation for 20 minutes daily over 8 weeks improved listening comprehension by an average of 42% compared to the passive-listening control group.

03

A tool refined over
2 years and 30,000 dictations.

Every button, every shortcut, every feedback loop has been tuned based on real learner behavior. Built for people who want to actually understand Japanese - not just study it.

The dictation method forced me to actually hear particles like wa, ga, and wo. My Japanese tutor said my listening improved more in two months than in the previous year.

Questions?
Here are the answers.

Chat with WELE on Facebook ->

Do I need to know hiragana and katakana to start?

+
While knowing hiragana and katakana will help, it is not strictly required to begin. WELE provides transcripts in romaji for absolute beginners, and you can gradually transition to reading in Japanese scripts as your skills develop.

How does dictation help with Japanese specifically?

+
Japanese has rapid speech patterns, pitch accent, and particles that are easily missed by untrained ears. Dictation forces you to actively decode every sound, training your brain to distinguish between similar sounds, recognize particles, and parse natural speech rhythm.

How long until I can understand Japanese podcasts?

+
Most learners notice meaningful improvement within 6-8 weeks of consistent daily practice. Japanese listening is often the hardest skill to develop, so patience and regularity are key. Even 15 minutes a day makes a significant difference.

Is WELE really free?

+
Yes. The Free plan is genuinely free - no time limits, no credit card required. You can do unlimited dictation, join the community, and participate in challenges. Premium adds AI-powered features and the full content library for $28/year.

Can I use WELE alongside other Japanese courses?

+
Absolutely! WELE is the perfect companion to textbook-based courses, apps like WaniKani or Anki, and classroom study. While other tools build your grammar and vocabulary, WELE fills the critical listening comprehension gap that most learners struggle with.

What types of Japanese content are available?

+
We offer a variety of Japanese podcasts covering daily conversation, news, culture, travel, and more. Content is organized by difficulty level - from beginner-friendly slow speech to native-speed discussions - so you can find material that matches your current ability and interests.

Can I cancel Premium anytime?

+
Yes. You can cancel Premium at any time from your account settings. After canceling, you keep Premium access until the end of your current billing period.
